The doll is actor and drama. The tradition of the bourgeois doll is
reversed: as a rule dolls translate known social and dramatic
roles into private fantasies, helping to form a conventional personal identity.
Friederike Mittellehner's dolls, by contrast, translate fantasies of possible identities into newly defined roles.
The expressions and gestures of the creatures are the performance. The
costumes and elaborate ornaments they wear are like the stage sets - the
backdrops- except they too are an expression of the beings themselves.
It is up to the individual viewing the work to make their own
relationship with it, and to come up with their own interpretation.
